The 1968 Chevrolet Corvette marked the year that the wild 'Mako Shark' dreamcar bodystyle appeared as a production vehicle available to the public. People couldn't believe Chevrolet actually built such an extreme car for public sale. Despite quality control issues the incredible new body style was a hit.

This remnant of a 1968 Corvette convertible is one of the salvage vehicles on the lot of The Corvette Shoppe GM Toys Inc in Portland, Oregon. This car certainly shows signs of spending time in Oregon. Like many of the cars on the lot it is covered in moss.

The VIN 194678S420163 decodes some of the story:

1= Chevrolet

9= Corvette

4= V8

67= Convertible

8= 1968 model year

S= St. Louis, Missouri final assembly plant.

420163= sequence number.

The orange T- top parked beside it had an unreadable VIN but the remnants of the emissions control sticker on the firewall provides a few hints with its mention of the EGR system. The rear end is missing the bumper cover so we don't know if it was one of the 1974 'split bumpers' or a later model version. The fact of a 5 MPH 'rubber bumper' combined with a vertical rear window restricts possible model years for the orange Vette between 1974 to 1977. The rear deck vents are present which means it is not a 1976 or later car, leaving 1974 or 1975 as the possible choices.
