This 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS appeared in fall, 2014 for sale at J&S Motors, Inc. 1711 E. 900 S., Fairmount, Indiana.  J & S specializes in Corvettes but also carries some other interesting cars in their used inventory.

The 1987 Monte Carlo SS managed to channel the visuals of the original muscle cars and retained a front engine rear drive layout. The Monte Carlo was built in large numbers as a regular passenger car that made the SS version a very useful daily driver just like the original wave of musclecars.

The Monte Carlo SS was hampered by the moderate power available from the small block 305. The 305 engine was designed to pass emissions and to provide decent fuel economy. Essentially it is a narrow bore version of the popular Chevy 350. A 'stroker' engine passes emissions more easily and the narrow bore ensures more efficient burn and hence lower fuel waste.

This is all well and good for meeting the ever tightening emissions and CAFE standards imposed upon car manufacturers but not ideal for a musclcecar. Over at Buick, the Grand National managed to not only channel the looks of the first musclecar era but to merge the modern fuel and emission requirements with actual blazing peformance via a turbo V6. Alas, the naturally aspirated 305 just didn't measure up.

The chassis of the Grand National and Monte Carlo was traditional musclecar set up which was getting outdated in comparison to vehicles of the time period but also re assuring in a familiar way. The lighter bodies built on shorter wheelbase combined with wider larger diameter tires and standard front discs and tire improvements made the new 'retro' musclecars handle noticeably better than their predecessors while preserving the 'flavor' of the old school ride.

This 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS is stated to be a ONE OWNER with only 54,000 miles. The ad mentions that this Monte has been garaged the last 18 years which suggests that it was not driven much after the 1990s. J & S assure us that the car runs and drives.
