1978 was the final model year for the gigantic Eldorado personal luxury car. In 1979 the Eldorado was significantly downsized.

Cadillac first used the name Eldorado for a top line convertible model in 1953, but the name is most closely associated with the front wheel drive 'personal car' that Cadillac introduced in 1967. The front wheel drive Eldorado used the same platform as the Oldsmobile Toronado. Olds produced the Toronado for the 1966 model year and worked out all the bugs before Cadillac released their production Eldorado.

The first generation Eldorado was very svelte for a Cadillac with beautiful flowing lines that suggested a hint of Buick Riviera styling except that the car was more sharply creased. The success of the Eldorado spurred Lee Iacocca over at Ford to answer by pushing a similar 'personal luxury car' into production called the Lincoln Mark III. Throughout the 1970s the Lincoln Mark series and the Eldorado were perceived to be the top of the status heap. One of these cars was the car you bought for yourself when you had 'made it'. MOTOR TREND compared the two cars in a series of road tests during the 1970s called 'King of the Hill'.

In keeping with the King of the Hill mindset, in 1970 a 500 cubic inch engine became an Eldorado exclusive which was the largest production engine offered in 1970. The rest of the Cadillac line made do with a 'mere' 472 cubic inches! From the 1977 model year the Eldorado engine became a 425 which is still a hefty sized engine.

The original lightly balanced lines of the Eldorado took on an ornate and massive tone when the car was redesigned for the 1971 model year. The main purpose of the redesign was to re establish Cadillac as bigger and more prestigious than the rest of the General Motors lineup. When the Chevrolet Impala assumed a Cadillac style front end combined with added massive bulk, the Cadillac needed to be larger and more ornate than a mere Chevy. The design evolved very gradually from this point forwards with the most obvious change being the introduction of square headlights.

As if having a Cadillac Eldorado wasn't enough, some people opted for the low production extra special version named Eldorado Biarritz.
