Jim Bassett Ford Sales was located in Giddings, Texas. When American Racing International experienced funding problems for the 1970 racing season many Ford dealerships provided assistance. JACK BURDEN FORD, Tomball, Texas/ (1970 Mach 1 AIR pace car replica promo for NASCAR)

Jack Burden Ford was located in Tomball, Texas.

When American Racing International experienced funding problems for the 1970 racing season many Ford dealerships provided assistance. One of the methods dealers helped promotion of the race was by ordering pace car replicas which served promotional duties at the race track.

In 1969 Jack Burden handled the paperwork for a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 VIN number 0F05M131235. This car was one of the pace cars for ARI. ARI was originally planning about to 100 replicas.

ARI was also invovled with Ford Motor Company who designed actual pace cars for the race. These cars were high performance convertible Mustangs. When ARI went into bankruptcy, the program fell through. Ford didn't want to lose the development work already done. The ARI pace car design was channeled into the Kansas sales district specialty car named Twister. See the full story of the Twister Mach 1s filed under Friendly Ford in the MISSOURI story in this DEALERSHIPS section.

The Jack Burden 1970 Mustang Mach 1 pace car was a special order car. As soon as it was completed delivery was made directly to the Texas International Speedway. The car was present Dec. 7, 1969 for the opening day ceremonies at the first NASCAR race of the season. The promotion car was Calypso Coral with a special graphic stripe on the side of the car and a large ARI pace car logo on the door. The car is currently owned by Ben E. Kozlovsky Sr in Austin, Texas.

Eugene Sr ran the Carrington Chevrolet Company until his death in 1945. Eugene, Jr. took over. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

CLASSIC CHEVROLET (1960), Grapevine, Texas/ 817-756-6866

Classic Chevrolet is located at 1101 West State Highway 114 in Grapevine, Texas. The business has been family owned since 1960. Current owner of Classic Chevrolet, Tom Durant owned his first dealership in 1972. Tom purchased Classic Chevrolet in 1988. The dealership was relocated to Grapevine, Texas in 1992. The dealership is truly 'Texas sized': covering 22 acres.

Tom Durant owns 10 dealerships in total. The other 9 dealerships are: Classic Buick GMC in Carrollton, Texas; Mike Brown Ford, Mike Brown Chrysler Jeep Dodge, and Classic Chevrolet Buick GMC in Granbury, Texas; Classic Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Mazda in Denton, Texas; Classic Buick GMC in Arlington, Texas; Classic Chevrolet Sugarland in Sugarland, Texas; Stingray Chevrolet in Plant City, Florida; and Classic Auto Group in Galveston, Texas.

Classic Chevrolet has been the largest volume dealership in the USA for 7 years. In spring of 2013 Classic had 2,125 new Chevrolet vehicles in stock. As you might expect in Texas, the majority of the vehicles are trucks. 480 of the new vehicles are cars. An impressive number of these cars (144) are new Camaros. They have 5 new Camaro 2SS convertibles, 13 new Camaro 2SS coupes, 2 new Camaro ZL1 coupes and 2 new Camaro ZL1 convertibles.

Classic has a large selection of new Corvettes with 21 Vettes in stock including some specialty models. They have a new Arctic White 2013 Corvette 427 1SC VIN # 1G1Y73DE7D5702470. The 427 (7.0 L) engine produces 505 HP and 470 ft/lbs of torque. It has a 6 speed manual and 3.42 limited slip axle. Magnetic Selective Ride Control has Sport and Tour mode and the steering is quite sophisticated, too. The rack and pinion power steering is speed sensitive variable ratio.

A new Torch Red 2013 Corvette ZO6 3LZ also uses the potent 7.0 L 427 engine. This Vette is VIN # 1G1YL2DE9D5109652 and uses carbon fiber front fenders and floors.

Classic has a new black 2013 Corvette coupe Grand Sport VIN # 1G1YW2DW8D5105172. The red accents on the exterior are supported with red inserts in the seats and door panels. The 6.2 L (376 c.i.) engine produces 430 HP and 424 ft/lbs of torque.

Classic has a new black 2013 Corvette coupe ZR1 3ZR in stock VIN # 1G1YN2DT5D5800461 which also uses the 'regular' 6.2 L engine, but in this instance it is supercharged. Supercharging the 6.2 L engine results in an astounding 638 HP and 604 ft/lbs of torque. As if all that power isn't enough, the ZR1 makes extensive use of carbon fiber.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

CLASSIC CHEVROLET BUICK GMC, Granbury, Texas (1960)/ 800-296-9188

Classic Chevrolet Buick GMC is located at 1909 East Highway 377 in Granbury, Texas. The dealership has been family owned since 1960. Current owner Tom Durant owns 10 dealerships. See the story about his primary dealership Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine, Texas for more information.

In spring of 2013 Classic Chevrolet in Granbury had 781 new vehicles in stock, 155 of which are cars. They have 11 new Camaros on the lot including two convertible SS Camaros and one SS coupe. They also have a new 2013 black Camaro ZL1 with the supercharged 6.2. In addition to the Camaros, they have 6 new Corvettes on the premises, including two Grand Sports.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Classic Chevrolet Sugarland is located in Sugarland, Texas and is owned by Tom Durant. Tom owns 10 dealerships. See more about him in the story about Classic Chevrolet, Grapevine, Texas.

CLASSIC CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM, Denton, Texas/ 888-727-9609 (see Classic Chev)

Classic Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram & Mazda is located at 4984 South Interstate 35 East in Denton, Texas. Current owner Tom Durant bought this dealership from former owner Richard Allen. Durant now owns 10 dealerships. See the story about his primary dealership Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine, Texas for more information. In spring of 2013 Classic Chrysler had new 377 vehicles in stock. 104 of the vehicles were Dodges and of that total they had 13 Challengers and 19 Chargers. They also had 3 of the new SVT Vipers. 9 of the Challengers were the new 2013 5.7 L R/Ts and 1 was a new 2013 SRT8 with the 6.4 L engine. The reason for only one SRT8 is apparently due to the fact that they still have a new 2012 SRT8 leftover from the prior year. Customers seem willing to move up to the R/T but the jump to SRT8 is too far.

DON DAVIS AUTO GROUP (1979), Arlington, TX

The Don Davis Auto Group owns Ford, Lincoln and a Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM dealership. The group also owns Nissan, Toyota and Scion dealerships as well as used dealerships.

DON DAVIS FORD, Arlington, TX/ 877-424-2942

dealer don davis ford arlington texas plate

Don Davis Ford is located at 633 North Highway 360 in Arlington, Texas. The dealership blossomed from a single dealership begun in 1979 into a network of dealers administered through Don Davis Auto Group. The lot is big with 396 new vehicles available.

Unlike many urban dealerships with a high percentage of Mustang stock, this dealer only carries ten new Mustangs. This is a reflection of the preference for trucks in the countryside. Nine of the 2013 Mustangs are V6, one is a 2013 GT and just to keep it interesting one is a 2013 Boss 302 VIN number 1ZVBP8CU7D5274660. Ford knows these cars will get driven as evidenced by a 180 MPH speedometer! It is Performance White, a most welcome color when the Texas sun is blazing down on you. The option list is kept simple, just like most of the Boss 302s on lots across the country: the Charcoal black Recaro seats (finished in cloth to cope with the Texas heat) with Torsen Helical differential is $1,995.00 and the Boss floor mats and car cover adds $475.00. Destination of $795.00 brings the MSRP to $45,465.00. This one was shipped out by rail Oct 29, 2012.

DON DAVIS LINCOLN, Arlington, TX- 877-424-2942

Don Davis Lincoln is located on the same premises as Don Davis Ford and is run by the same managers. They have 42 new Lincolns on the lot.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

DON DAVIS DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP RAM, Arlington, TX/ 877-377-6801

Don Davis Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram is located at 1901 North Collins, Arlington, Texas. The lot has 221 new cars, with only 11 being Challengers. Often Ford and GM dealers will have ponycars accounting for up to 40 of their cars. Unfortunately the Challenger doesn't seem to be selling as well. They have mostly 2013 SXTs with two 2013 R/Ts. Because of the slowdown in Challenger sales many Dodge dealers haven't been stocking the SRT8 top models on their lots.

FORD BAYTOWN INC., Baytown, TX (1970 Mach 1 ARI pace car promo)

Ford Baytown Inc. was located in Baytown, Texas. It is possible that this is the same dealership that now exists under the name Baytown Ford which is located at 4110 Interstate 10 E, Baytown, Texas.

When American Racing International experienced funding problems for the 1970 racing season many Ford dealerships provided assistance. One of the methods dealers helped promotion of the race was by ordering pace car replicas which served promotional duties at the race track.

Ford Baytown ordered a Mach 1 VIN 0F05M131747, built in Nov,  1970, and like the rest it was a Calypso Corral car. It has the standard Mach 1 features plus the FMX automatic. In the early 2000s Adam Schweizer owned it.

GAY BUICK GMC, Dickinson, Texas/ 832-769-4157 (formerly Gay Pontiac)

Gay Buick GMC is located at 3033 Gulf Freeway in Dickinson, Texas. The dealership was founded in 1948 by Carl and Marie Gay. The original location on Highway 3, Dickinson, Texas lasted until 1965 when a move was made to the current location. Gay Pontiac was quite famous in the 1960s not just for being a high performance parts dealer but also for fielding a successful drag racing cars campaigned under the name Don Gay Pontiac.

With the death of Pontiac, Gay Family Auto became Gay Buick GMC. In fall of 2013 the lot contained 411 new vehicles. 42 of which are cars. Texas dealers typically sell trucks in a much greater proportion than coast dealerships.

The new cars in stock are all Buicks. 18 Buick LaCrosse, 10 Buick Regals, 14 Buick Veranos. In a nod to the past history as a car performance dealer there is a new 2013 Buick Regal GS in stock, VIN 2G4GV5GV2D9249678. The Black Diamond colored GS is a different animal than the GS Buicks of the past. Equipped with a tiny front wheel drive 2.0 L turbo with automatic transmission the car returns EPA numbers of 18 City/ 29 Highway MPG while moving out pretty well for such a small engine. This is a refinement of the Buick Grand National concept. When you are doing routine commuting you can reap the rewards of a smaller engine, then when you want to get on it, the power is there waiting for you. Gay also had three new Regals in Premium 1, 2 and 3 levels of the Turbo without the GS badge.

GAY PONTIAC, Dickinson, TX (drag racing sponsor)

Gay Pontiac was established by Carl and Marie, Gay. Gay Pontiac was located on the Gulf Highway in Dickinson, Texas. The Gay dealership not only sponsored drag racing but also bought Freeway Drag Strip and renamed it Houston Drag Raceway. The dragstrip name evolved into Houston International Speedway before changing to Houston International Raceway.

Carl's son Don switched from school athletics to drag racing after seeing Hayden Proffitt drive his Mickey Thompson Pontiac Catalina factory experimental 421 at his dad's race track in 1961. Don had his driver's license at age 14 which was legal in Texas so nothing could stop him from racing. Gay Pontiac sponsored Don in an A/Stock Pontiac Catalina sedan and an A/Modified Production Catalina station wagon. Don's kid brother Roy raced a B/Stock GTO. Don won A/S Class at the 1964 NHRA Nationals. James Osteen was head mechanic.

In 1964 once again a racer at his father's race track influenced Don Gay in his choice of ride. After seeing Arnie 'The Farmer' Beswick run a blown GTO he rallied the family to build a blown racer out of a 1965 Pontiac GTO sitting on the family car lot.The funny car that resulted was named Infiinity. This car continued to compete with Roy Gay driving. Don had moved up to a tube chassis and fiberglass bodied 1966 GTO racecar. Infinity IV was a 1968 style GTO funny car. The final Infinity car (V) was a Firebird funny car. Roy died in a motorcycle accident in 1972.The Gay family pooled resouces with Greg, Gary, and Glenn Angel to build Houston Raceway Park in Baytown. The track was renamed Royal Purple Raceway

JOHNSON CHEVROLET, Dallas, TX (Sponsored ZO6 1963 Vette at Sebring)

Johnson Chevrolet was located on Ross Avenue, Dallas, Texas. The dealership was established by Delmo Johnson, Sr. in Ennis, Texas in 1924. Delmo relocated in 1929 to Marshall, Texas during the depression in the hopes that the larger population there would provide enough sales to keep afloat.

Delmo Johnson, Jr. was born in Ennis Feb 7, 1933. In 1936 Delmo, Sr. moved the dealership to Dallas, Texas. At the age of 12 Delmo, Jr. began working for his father at the dealership. After marriage in 1951 and graduation from North Texas University Delmo, Jr. worked full time with his father. Delmo, Jr.'s career was interrupted with military service. In 1957 he was finally freed to take over the Dallas dealership.

Delmo won his first race in 1959 driving a 1959 Corvette. With that encouragement behind him he began racing everywhere whenever he could. Delmo also raced a sacrilegious Jaguar XKSS with Chevy power.

Johnson sponsored himself in a 1963, Chevrolet Corvette with optional 36-gallon gas tank, fuel injected 327/360hp engine, and Z0-6 racing performance suspension and brake package.

Delmo Johnson Jr., and Dave Morgan drove the car on February 17, 1963 and later used the car for the March 21-23, 1963 Sebring Florida managing to place 2nd in class. The Corvette was in front of all the other Corvettes in class entered that year and also beat the 3.0 liter Ferrari of Hayes / Thiem and the Cobra of Gurney / Hill. The car was sold in the fall of 63 raced extensively and ended up in storage. in 2003 Ken and Gary Naber verified the history of the car and bought it for their Houston, Texas Corvette Restoration shop.

Delmo bought a 1963 Corvette Grand Sport that was originally owned by Grady Davis and raced by Dick Thompson. He drove it in Sebring but despite being faster than the other cars its handling and braking hindered progress. Delmo deviated from road course racing to dust off the AHRA champion Corvette owned by Jack Ferrill. Delmo beat Ferrill's driver Phil Mote and Jack himself in several runs. Delmo came in 2nd place in the wild Carrera Pan Americana of 1964 which pretty much destroyed the car. Delmo sold the car. The car (004 of 5 GS cars built) was restored and is in the Collier collection.

Delmo quit racing in 1965 and switched to flying shows and later competitive shooting.

Johnson later became one of the earliest distributors of the Yenko Stingers. Johnson also became a valuable source of elite Corvettes for Don Campbelll's Seattle Washington used car lot. Don worked for famous performance dealer Allan Green and drove a few racecars under the Green dealer sponsor before opening his own car lot across from the Green location.

In 1980 Johnson Chevrolet was closed down although Delmo didn't retire. He ran other busiesses and continued his flying and fun ways. Delmo died May 14, 2015.

LUKE JOHNSON FORD, Houston/TX (1970 Mach 1 ARI pace car promo)/ location now Jack Roach

Luke Johnson Ford was located at 6445 Southwest Freeway during its boom years. The dealership was established by Luke Johnson in 1955. Luke was born Apr 15, 1921 in Montgomery, Alabama, Luke married Shirley Irene Roach Sep 28, 1946 in Houston, Texas and was thus exposed to the car business. Shirley Roach who was born Jan 7, 1925 is the daughter of Jack Roach. Jack established Jack Roach Ford in 1925 and played an important role in helping Luke get his own Ford dealership. Shirley died Aug 21, 2001 long after both dealerships were just a memory.

Luke Johnson's corporate holding company Westway Ford, Inc was initiated Monday, August 22, 1955. After 10 years the dealership was succesful enough to move to the large Freeway location in 1965.

Luke Johnson, Sr died Oct 8, 1980 in Houston, Texas while the dealership was flourishing. His first born son, Luke, Jr took over the dealership and ran into problems.

Luke Johnson, Jr was born May 4, 1948 in Houston, Texas. He had difficulty managing the dealership. Proof of this is evidenced by his second marriage on Oct 13, 1979 to Joan Kaleta Hepburn Blaffer in Houston, Texas. Joan was born in 1952 and is the granddaughter of Robert Lee Blaffer, one of the founders of Humble Oil and Refining Company, now called Exxon. Despite receiving help from his new wealthy connections Luke's dealership was forced to endure bankruptcy. The dealership emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy August, 1994.

Luke Johnson, Jr died May 5, 1995. The dealership was taken over and renamed Hillcroft Ford and run by Bob Crow until Ford could position another old time dealer in the spot. Ironically the grandson of Jack Roach was the dealer who Ford requested take over his deceased cousin's Luke Johnson Ford dealership lot. You may recall that Luke Johnson, Sr married Shirley Roach. Shirley's father helped Luke Sr acquire the Ford franchise and now Shirley's great nephew Jack Roach III was cleaning up the fall out.

On June 6, 1997 at Ford's request Jack Roach III purchased the former Johnson location and consolidated all of his separate Jack Roach Ford buildings all into one spot.

Luke Johnson, Jr's may not have handled the dealership properly, but his father's legacy seems safe with the grandchildren. Luke's first marriage to Leonora Kerr in Mexico in 1968 produced three children, two of whom are still involved in the auto industry. Luke Johnson III was born Sep 22, 1971, Houston, Texas and is doing well with Mobilease. His younger brother Peter Johnson (May 17, 1974) also works for Mobilease.

Luke Johnson Ford was one of the dealers who participated in the American Racing International pace car program. Luke Johnson Ford ordered 1970 Mach 1 VIN 0F05M132485 which was sent directly to the Texas International Speedway as a promo car. The majority of the replica pace cars came with 351 Windsor or Cleveland engines while the actual pace cars had 428 engines. The Luke Johnson promo Mach 1 is currently owned by Marco Kallel.

MONK KING PONTIAC INC, Denton, TX- Drag sponsor 'Black Gold'

Monk King Pontiac Inc was located at 200 South Locust in Denton, Texas. The owner Warren G. 'Monk' King was part of the pit crew at Daytona and also sponsored drag racing entries named "Black Gold".

The first 'Black Gold' was a wrecked 1964 GTO that a customer returned to Van Winkle Pontiac. See the story on Van Winkle further down in this section. During the early 1960s Monk King was sales manager at Van Winkle. The red GTO was repainted black and gold like the Daytona Catalinas that King had worked the pits on. King made the newly painted GTO into a drag car with a lot of help from Smokey Yunick who built the 389 engine. Monk King also had a 1965 Tempest that he raced.

In late 1968 Monk King opened his own dealership in Denton, Texas and made the 'Black Gold' cars into representatives of his new dealership.

Monk King was also one of the participants in Pontiac Motor Division's Drag Race Dealer Program. Dealers who sponsored and raced a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge received free drivetrains. Dealers could run Ram Air III 400 engines, Ram Air IV 400 engines and a choice of 4 speed or automatic.

The one detail Pontiac stipulated was that the Judges had to be painted Carousel Red. This was the Pontiac name for a Chevrolet paint that Chevy called Hugger Orange. The first 2,000 of the new 1969 Pontiac GTO Judges were painted Carousel Red to create a strong impact. By insisting that all the drag strip Judges were the same color Pontiac created a visual continuity anytime one was spotted at a drag strip. The 1969 Judge was available in many colors but because of the strength of the original Carousel Red campaign many dealerships ordered this color to ensure product identification when parking Judges on their lots. At the end of the Judge model run for 1969 it was estimated 80% of the Judges were painted this color.

Later Monk King set up a 1971 T-37 drag car also painted black and gold. Sadly, in 1975 Monk King suffered a heart attack and lost his dealership because of his weakened health.

In 1999 Don Deppe found the original 1964 'Black Gold' GTO and did a frame off restoration on the car. In 2009 at the Dayton GTO Nationals 'Co-Vention' a silver Catalina was on display with the Van Winkle race lettering on it.

Dan Steakley Chevrolet Company was established April 1, 1958 by Dan L Steakley. Dan Lewis Steakely was born Oct 21, 1912 in Nolan County, Texas. On Nov 30, 1934 Dan wed Claydene Hall Hodge (born Feb 6, 1913, Texas). She taught third grade in Knox City during the Great Depression and World War II. In 1947 Dan established his first Chevrolet dealership in Knox City. After a decade at this dealership Dan moved to Temple, Texas after acquiring the Temple Chevrolet dealership in 1957. The dealership was listed as Dealer 700 Zone 07 in 1964.

By the mid 1960s Steakley had two locations. The main one was located at 3625 General Bruce Drive in Temple, Texas. Steakley called Temple "Chevy Town for all of Texas" and backed it up with 7 acres of stock. The 1960s Steakley ads claimed that Steakley had the lowest prices on Chevrolet Camaro SS cars. They also promoted the fact that they had an in house 'Sports Shop' which used the trademark SS typeface from the Camaro SS logo.

The second location was at 254 N Penelope, Benton, Texas. The dealership sponsored Kelly Chadwick's 1968 Camaro Wild Thing II funnycar that relied on 427 cubic inches of injected Chevy power at a time when the Hemi motors were fairly dominant. The car ran 8.5 seconds at about 165 MPH. At this point the dealership name was Steakley Brothers Chevrolet. Kelly Chadwick was known as 'The Flying Schoolteacher'

Steakley Chevrolet's final location was at N W Hwy and Abrams Road. The impact of the Chevy dealership on the local economy is reflected in the names of streets directly behind the dealership: Impala and Quality. The dealership was sold in 1999 to the AutoNation dealership group. AutoNation renamed the location Bankston Chevrolet. Bankston subsequently closed leaving the buildings vacant.

Dan died Jan 17, 2007,  in Temple, Bell County, Texas Age 94. Claydene died Apr 5, 2009 at age 96.

FENNER TUBBS CO. Chrysler Plymouth, Lubbock, TX (became Spirit Chry Ddg Jp) Drag sponsor

Fenner Tubbs Co. was a Chrysler Plymouth dealer located at 4611 Avenue Q, Lubbock, Texas. The dealership was established by Fenner Tubbs in 1940 on April Fool's Day. Fenner Tubbs was born to Robert Isham Tubbs and Cora Lee Jones Tubbs on June 18, 1912, in Lubbock, Texas. Fenner had one brother, Carlisle Tubbs and one sister, Loys Tubbs (Patterson).

While studying at Texas Tech. Fenner gained experience from his sideline job selling new and used cars. The side job led to a career when he opened Fenner Tubbs Company. His dealership was inaugurated with one car for sale. He married Juanelle Windom at sunrise in Tahoka on June 22, 1935. Fenner was known for his wit.

Fenner sponsored several Plymouth 426 cubic inch Max Wedge drag cars. The first car was white before the Fenner Tubbs cars became black. A black Tubbs Plymouth won NHRA Top Stock Car World Champion in 1965 with Joe Smith driving. He went on to form Joe Smith Racecars in Dallas, Texas.

Joe's brother Jerry Smith also drove for Fenner Tubbs. Jerry was born Dec. 28, 1935, to Brad and Lula Smith in Howland, Texas. Jerry raced Go karts, motorcycles, dirt track cars and then got into drag racing. He campaigned the new 1962 Max Wedge Plymouth, and then a 63 Max Wedge sponsored by Fenner Tubbs. Later he got into dragsters driving the Buck's Irrigation Top Fuel dragster in the late 60's with his friends Prentiss Cunningham and Carl Jones. Jerry Smith passed away Jan. 8, 2016.

A fully restored 1963 Plymouth Savoy two door 426 Max Wedge appeared for sale in East Weymouth, Massachusetts. The seller documented this white car as originally sold through Fenner Tubbs. Despite only 19,850 original miles the car was fully restored. It was campaigned by Fenner Tubbs on the drag racing circuit for a short period of time in 1963. The car was driven by World Class Record Holder Joe Smith. The car was never cut. tubbed. subframed of altered in any way. There is no evidence that the car ever had a roll bar installed in it.
