Brinsfield Lincoln Mercury was located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Brinsfield sponsored the red Sox & Martin 1964 Comet 427 AF/X drag car driven by Ronnie Sox. The car made the cover of SUPER STOCK & DRAG ILLUSTRATED Nov, 1964.

Capitol Ford is located at 5411 N Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina. This dealer was formerly Young Ford which traces back to 1952. In spring, 2015 Capitol had 304 new vehicles in stock, 113 of which were cars. 21 of their new cars were Mustangs.


ENGLISH FORD, High Point, NC (sponsored Wood brothers NASCAR 1963 Galaxie)

English Ford was located in High Point, North Carolina and sponsored the Wood brothers NASCAR 1963 Galaxie. Glen Wood drove this car to victory in July and later Marvin Panch scored a first place in this car in September.


GARRETT FORD, Hendersonville, NC (NASCAR sponsor 1972 LeeRoy Yarbrough)

Garrett Ford was located in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The dealership was established in Jan, 1955 when Cecil Garrett bought the local Ford dealership from Grady Rankin at 7th Ave and Main Street, Hendersonville. Cecil Garrett was born in High Point where he completed his early schooling. He graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of North Carolina which came in handy when designing a new dealership in 1972.

In 1958 the dealership was relocated to the Asheville Highway. On Nov 17, 1972 Garrett Ford celebrated the opening of a large modern facility on Duncan Hill Road. Garrett Ford sponsored the NASCAR 1971 Ford Torino 427 c.i. fastback #45 piloted by LeeRoy Yarbrough in 1972.


GATE CITY MOTOR CO INC, Greensboro, NC (sponsored Sox & Martin drag cars/ became Linc Merc)

Gate City Motor Company Inc was located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Gate City Motors was started by C.W. Edwards in 1914 at 200 East Market Street, Greensboro, North Carolina. The dealership was eventually bought by an employee named Brown who started in the company in the 1920s. The dealer was a Chrysler Plymouth dealer for the majority of its life.

The dealership relocated near the intersection of Friendly Avenue and Church Street in the 1940s. After that it was moved to the current location of Greensboro Children's Museum on North Church Street. Brown's son P. David Brown started working for Gate City Motors in the 1950s after graduating UNC-Chapel Hill. The dealership address at that time was 320 North Forbes and the dealership also carried Imperial.

The Gate City Motor Co sponsored the Sox & Martin winning drag cars.

Gate City eventually became a Lincoln Mercury dealership. The final location of the dealers was  established in 1984 at 300 N. Church St. The death of the Mercury brand in 2010 hurt business. Second generation Brown owner P. David Brown Sr was forced to close Gate City Lincoln Mercury in April 2011.

The dealership was purchased by Green Ford.


HARRY'S ON THE HILL (Buick GMC Cadillac), Asheville, NC 828-252-3821

Harry's on the Hill is a Buick GMC Cadillac dealership located at 819 Patton Ave,, Asheville, North Carolina. The dealership traces back to 1923. Harry's on the Hill was established by Harry Blomberg. Harry also established a car museum near the dealership named Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum located at 111 Grovewood Road, Asheville, NC. The antique cars are maintained by two former long-time auto mechanics from Harry's on the Hill (Carl Shook, 88, and Ralph Godfrey, 78). They run the engines of the antique cars three times a year to ensure the engines don't seize up.

In spring, 2015 Harry's had 145 new vehicles in stock, 23 of which were cars.


HILL-NANCE CHEVROLET CO., Asheboro, NC (became Nance Chev Co)

Hill- Nance Chevrolet Company was located in Asheboro, North Carolina. On July 26, 1926 the dealership became Nance Chev Co when Max Nance bought out his partner.


LAFAYETTE FORD, Fayetteville, NC (NASCAR sponsor 1963 Fred Lorenzen) 800-810-7493

Lafayette Ford is located at 5202 Raeford Rd, Fayetteville, North Carolina. Lafayette was established in 1949 as Lafayette Motor Sales and remains a family owned operation today. The dealership was originally in downtown Fayetteville and owned by George Purvis.

Lafayette was a NASCAR sponsor in 1963 for Fred Lorenzon's Holman Moody Galaxie #28. His new teammate Fireball Roberts in #22 won the March 31, 1963 race. Roberts used to drive Pontiacs but switched to Ford 1 week prior to this race.

'Fearless Freddy' Lorenzon often visited the dealership and as a very popular driver he attracted a lot of fans. In the 1970s sponsorship of NASCAR switched to National companies and Lafayette Ford dropped out of the sponsorship limelight. However new owner Don Price managed to sponsor a car in 2008 that was even numbered #28! Robert Yates Racing carried the Lafayette Ford logo for a race at Darlington.

Don Price started as a salesman at Lafayette Ford in 1965 and moved his way up the ranks to become owner. Don's son Tim Price and son in law Mark Fisher now work with him. In spring, 2015 Lafayette had 302 new vehicles in stock.


NANCE CHEVROLET COMPANY, Asheboro, NC (became Wayne Thomas Chev Cadillac)

Nance Chevrolet Company was located at , Asheboro, North Carolina. The company originated several years prior as Hill-Nance Chevrolet. On July 26, 1926 it was registered to Max A. Nance following buyout of his partner.

Max Nance was from Randolph County born to Raymond E. and Verdie Nance but raised by step-mother Katie Belle Nance. Max graduated from Asheboro High School and Wake Forest University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was married to Margaret Cox Nance.

Max was owner/operator of Nance Chevrolet Company until the dealership was purchased by Wayne Thomas in 1991. Max died age 78, Tuesday, December 6, 2005.

Bob Neill Pontiac 2710 University Parkway, Winston Salem, North Carolina. Neill Pontiac sponsored a Pontiac racecar at Bristol for NASCAR 1961 driver Jim Paschal in car #44.


JIM SIMMONS PONTIAC BUICK INC, Concord, NC (Sold special NC paint LeMans GT)

Jim Simmons Pontiac Buick Inc was located at 829 Church Street, Concord, NC. Simmons sold a special Carolinas exclusive painted 1972 LeMans GT. The pale blue paint is named Carolina Blue and was a limited production color intended for Carolina dealers only. The VIN 2D37N2A189123 decodes as:

2= Pontiac Motor Division

D= LeMans

37= 2 Door hardtop

N= 350-2 bbl engine

2= 1972 Model year

A= Atlanta, Georgia final assembly plant.

189123= Sequence number.

The cowl tag indicates that the scheduled build date was 3rd week of April.

The LeMans GT was shipped April 24, 1972 with these options: "Solic" (?) Special $72.00, GT option $231.00, AM Radio $65.00, Vinyl Trim $27.00, 350-2 Bbl engine $118.00, Soft Ray Windshield $30.00 adding up to a suggested retail price of $3,510.65.

The low mileage car was ground up restored at 40,000 miles by Muscle Car Designs, Joliet, Illinois in March, 2014. At this time a 1970 vintage 455 and wide ratio 4 speed Muncie were added along with power steering, power front disc brakes and the duck tail spoiler that never made its way into production. The shot below highlights the spoiler.

The original black bench seat interior was retained except that the original 2 spoke steering wheel was replaced with a 3 spoke wood rim wheel. The car turned up at Napoli Classics, 241 Boston Post Road, Milford, CT listed for $35,000.00 and later reduced to $33,000.00.


SOUTHERN MOTORS INC (Chrysler Plymouth), High Point, NC (NASCAR sponsor, inc Petty)

Southern Motors Inc was a Chrysler Plymouth dealer located at 901 South Main Street, High Point, North Carolina. In the Aug 1963 issue of MOTOR TREND a picture of one of their cars can be seen as a NASCAR sponsor. Later in 1971 this dealership sponsored 'King' Richard Petty in a Roadrunner for the NASCAR season. By the 1970s the official name of the dealership was Southern Chrysler Plymouth Inc.


WAYNE THOMAS CHEVROLET CADILLAC, Asheboro, NC (formerly Nance Chev) 336-308-0019

Wayne Thomas Chev Cadillac is located at 1400 E. Dixie Drive, Asheboro, North Carolina. This dealership was formerly Nance Chevrolet Company. Wayne and Dan Thomas bought the dealership in June, 1991. In May, 2006 the Cadillac franchise was added. In winter 2017 Thomas had 9 new 2017 Camaros in stock, 3 of which were SS models.

Town and Country Ford is located at 5401 East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte, NC. The star shaped dealer plate looks like a police badge from a distance. You can't mistake a car that came from this dealership. The dealership has been in existence since the late 1960s and selling Fords since the late 1970s. They have won the Ford President's Award which is only given to the top 340 customer satisfaction dealers annually. Ford has 5,000 + dealerships which means 6.8 percent of Ford dealers meet the criteria for this award.

Winebarger Motor Co Inc is a Ford dealership located at 850 N Bridge St, Elkin, North Carolina. Winebarger was a 1968 NASCAR sponsor for LeeRoy Yarbrough driving #26. Yarbrough finished 3rd March 17, 1968 driving #26 which was owned by Junior Johnson.

In spring, 2015 Winebarger had 7 new cars in stock, 2 of which were new 2015 Mustangs: 1 Ecoboost and 1 GT.


FRANK WOODS, INC. (Pontiac), Charlotte, NC/ Closed

Frank Woods, Inc. was located at 516- 22 S. Tyson, Charlotte, North Carolina. The dealership traces back into the 1950s and was dealership 316 659.

There were only seventeen 1971 Pontiac GTO Judge convertibles built. Two of these highly collectiible cars were painted Tropical Lime. The one with black top and interior is VIN 242671P110472 and was shipped Jan 8, 1971 to Frank Woods Inc. The very rare Judge appeared for sale years later by Dan McKinnon of Virginia. YOUNG FORD, Charlotte, NC (NASCAR sponsor 1963 Fireball Roberts)

Young Ford was located at 4800 E Independence Blvd, Charlotte, North Carolina. Young Ford was established in 1952 which made it the 2nd oldest dealership in Charlotte. Young sponsored Fireball Roberts in his Holman Moody car #22 during the July 28, 1963 NASCAR race at Bristol. Roberts walked away from the car after flipping end over end 4 times when the car hit the wall. Young Ford moved to 5411 N Tryon Street and were taken over by General Ford.
