ASPEN MOTORS (Plymouth Chrysler International Harvester), Flagstaff, AZ

Aspen Motors was dealing Plymouth Chrysler and International Harvester in 1978. The name Aspen Motors tied in with the new car model called the Aspen which was brought in to replace the immensely popular Dart. Why fix something that isn't broken? Worse yet, why replace a car with 20 years of loyal fans with a car that wasn't ready? The Aspen was released and it brought Mopar to its knees. Aspen became an unfortunate name for a Chrysler car dealership. Aspen Motors was located at 800 West Highway 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona. The company later became a used car dealership and relocated to 1050 W Route 66, Flagstaff but closed down in the 2000s.

CHESHIRE MOTORS, Flagstaff, AZ/ 1962-became Tyrrell Chevrolet

Chesire Motors was a Chevrolet-Buick dealership located at the corner of East Route 66 and North Sitgreaves Street in downtown Flagstaff, Arizona. The business traces back to at least the 1940s. The owner C. C. Chesire set up his brother-in-law A. T. Davis, Jr. in the auto business. Davis ran a second Chesire Chevrolet-Buick dealership in nearby Williams, Arizona at 520 East Bill Williams Avenue. This dealership was taken over by Olson Motors. See the story below.

Gale Glendon Tyrrell was born May 31, 1922 at Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. After Navy duty during WWII he bought Cheshire Motors on Aug 1, 1962. As the dealership caught on, Gale was able to buy 10 acres of land on the west side of Flagstaff to build a new dealership at 1118 West Route 66, Flagstaff, Arizona. The grand opening was May 26, 1967 just a few days prior to Gale's 45th birthday.

The dealership was soon known as Tyrrell Chevrolet and then later Tyrrell Chevrolet Buick Co. When Buick was paired with GMC by a GM management 1997 reshuffling, Tyrrell dropped Buick and brought Cadillac back to the dealership. At the same time, he also renamed the business to reflect his partnership with Terry Marxen. See the story of Tyrrell- Marxen in this section. After Gale Tyrrell died in 2008 Terry Marxen resisted GM's attempts to remove Tyrrell's name from the dealership until a massive renovation in 2012 justified a name change to Terry Marxen Chevrolet. See the story in this section on Marxen's new building.

This dealership was taken over by Olson Motors. See the story below.

TERRY MARXEN CHEVROLET, Flagstaff, AZ/ 888-586-0450

Gale Glendon Tyrrell established Chesire Motors in 1962 at the corner of East Route 66 and North Sitgreaves Street in downtown Flagstaff, Arizona. See the story in this section for more details. When Chesire moved to 1118 West Route 66, Flagstaff in 1967 the dealership was known as Tyrrell Chevrolet and then later Tyrrell Chevrolet Buick Co.

In 1971 Terry Marxen had just graduated from Northern Arizona University and needed a job. Terry became a salesman at Gale Tyrrell's dealership, Tyrrell Chevrolet. By 1978 Terry was general manager.

In 1997 Tyrrell and Marxen became partners. At this time GMC was paired up with Buick in a corporate branding exercise which induced Tyrrell to dump Buick and take on Cadillac again. Thus the name change to Tyrell-Marxen Chevrolet Cadillac. Later Olds was added, too. After doing business as Tyrrell- Marxen Chevrolet Oldsmobile Cadillac Inc, the loss of Olds forced a name change to Tyrrell- Marxen Chevrolet Cadillac.

On May 15, 2008 dealership principle Gale Tyrrell died, but Terry Marxen wanted to keep Tyrrell's name alive on the dealership. Pressure from GM combined with a 2012 complete renovation of the dealership finally prompted Terry to give in and remove Tyrrell's name from the dealership. Current owner Terry Marxen has completely renovated the building. He noted that the typical rural ratio of truck to car sales that has been holding steady for decades at 2 to 1 is slowly morphing in favour of cars.

The dealership is located at 1118 West Route 66, Flagstaff, Arizona.

At the start of 2013 Marxen had 199 new vehicles in stock, 16 new Cadillacs and 183 new Chevrolets. Marxen is right on Route 66 which is associated in popular culture with a Red Corvette. The remake of the popular ROUTE 66 TV series featured a red Corvette. The original ROUTE 66 1960s series was filmed in black and white and never used a red Corvette. During the four year run of the original TV series, they used Beige Corvettes. The pilot episode used a Powder Blue Vette which made lighting tricky and was hence switched for a Beige car after that one episode.

Despite the facts, a Red Corvette is what the public expects on Route 66 and Marxen Chevrolet doesn't mess with legends. They have an appropriate new 2013 Crystal Red Tintcoat Corvette 3LT automatic coupe on hand, VIN 1G1YG2DW1D5108413. The options add $9,890.00 to the price of the car. The list is impressive: Transparent removable roof panel $750.00, Battery Protection Package $100.00 (on a Corvette this is almost NOT an option. Infrequent use kills the battery which wreaks havoc on electronic computer controls), Cross-drilled brake rotors $500.00, 6-speed Paddle Shift automatic transmission $1,250.00, Crossed-flags embroidery on head restraint $300.00, 3LT Preferred Equipment Group $5,995.00, Crystal Red Tintcoat $995.00. MSRP is $60,485.00.

They also have five 2013 six cylinder Camaros on hand, including one Inferno Orange one.

In the 1960s they also ran a bodyshop down the street Olson Motors Bodyshop at 133 E Bill Williams Ave, Williams, AZ. Although they were already in business at least as early as 1963, they didn't incorporate until Oct 16, 1967. In small script the name Vernon Newton appears in margins of the dealer logo above.

In 1978 Larry K Olson was president and Glen W Olsen was second in command. In 1996 the corporation name was changed to M & M Oil Co Inc., and in 2004 the name was revised to Olson Stations Inc. Of the 448 new vehicles in stock, 29 are Chrysler, 85 are Dodge, 65 are Jeep and 95 are RAM. The high number of trucks is typical for rural areas especially Flagstaff which is surounded by desert area. True to the nature of the landscape and buying habits of the locals, there is only one token new 2013 Dodge Challenger on the lot, and it's just an SXT.
