MPG Index- oneownercollectorcar.com

Writing and photography copyright D. S. Brown

The articles in the GAS LOGS are sorted by model year running from oldest to newest. The stories compare real driver's Miles Per Gallon with magazine tests, magazine owner reports, Mobil Economy run results and EPA estimates. The Index below compares the real life user statistics by manufacturer, lowest to highest MPG, lowest to highest vehicle weight, smallest to largest engine displacement and so on.

The figures below are from real life drivers in various conditions so its not an exact apples to apples comparison the way EPA tests are. The OOCC results don't come from a dynamometer but real cars on real streets in real traffic in various weather conditions and with varying loads and driving styles.

The EPA uses a consistent baseline for cars tested. The original EPA urban driving cycle mimics rush hour in Los Angeles in 1972. After 1984 increased congestion forced the EPA to back the estimates down by 10% for City figures and 22% for Highway figures. The figures were adjusted downwards again for 2008 model year, taking into account A/C use, lower outside temperatures and higher speeds.

The OOCC GAS LOGS have some figures from 'back in the day' when these cars were new as well as up to date figures in today's traffic using today's ethanol laced fuels and higher PSI lower rolling resistance tires. See each individual story for details.

EXPLANATION OF TABLES BELOW

The car name is followed by a summary of technical information.

The first number is cubic inch engine size, the second is fuel delivery system.

"350-2"= a 350 cubic inch engine with a 2 barrel carburetor/ "350-4"= a 350 with 4 barrels/ "350- FI"= a 350 with fuel injection. EFI is Electronic Fuel Injection. (T)= Turbocharged, (S)= Supercharged.

"1 Exh"= a single exhaust system/ "2 Exh"= dual/ (C)= catalytic converter/ (H)= headers.

"A 2"= 2 speed automatic/ "A 3"= 3 speed auto/ "M 4"= a manual shift 4 speed/ "(O)"= overdrive ratio on top gear whether it is manual or auto/ "(L)"= lockup converter.

"2.78"= a 2.78:1 rear axle ratio or FWD transaxle ratio. The bracketed number after the axle ratio is the final drive ratio if there is an overdrive transmission.

"225/70-14"= tire width is 225 MM, sidewall is 70% of the width and the rim size is 14 inches.

Bracketed numbers indicate car weights in pounds with curb weight listed first. Curb weight includes all fluids at capacity including a full gas tank. Factory and aftermarket options on each particular car are added onto the basic curb weight.

Following the slash, the second number gives the weight of the OOCC car as driven in the GAS LOGS. The driver, occasional passengers or cargo weight are averaged out for overall duration of driving. A car that carries a 200 pound passenger one quarter of the driving time adds one quarter of that person's weight (50 pounds) to the curb weight. Carrying 50 pounds of sand in winter adds that weight for 1/4 of a year which averages an extra 12.5 pounds on the curb weight. Driving with an empty gas tank most of the time subtracts 100 pounds from the curb weight which manufacturers measure with a full tank.

HIGHWAY MILES is a steady speed with minimal starting or stopping. Ideal highway MPG conditions would be several hours of driving 70 mph in light traffic on a flat dry interstate.

CITY MILES indicates city driving including heavy traffic on a secondary highway with traffic lights and stops. Even an interstate may qualify if it passes through a major city amidst stop and go gridlock.

OVERALL AVERAGE used on the OOCC website is not similar to the EPA 'combined rating'. This is a real life summary of how many gallons were used over the course of all driving. The ratio of City and Hwy will vary with each individual so it's not a precise apples to apples comparison, just a real life figure for one person. When it is actually possible to know how much of each type of driving was done brackets indicate the ratio of City to Hwy. For example (C 40/ H 60) means 40% of the mileage was in the city, 60% on the highway.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Body style, engine, carburetor or fuel injection, exhaust, transmission, differential and tires are all big factors in MPG. Items like automatic transmissions and A/C add weight and heat which sap energy from the engine. Older automatics were nicknamed 'slushboxes' because the method of power transfer occurs initially through a fluid coupling which causes slippage and loss of efficiency. Lock-up convertors have solved this energy loss allowing modern cars with computer controlled automatics to get better MPG than manual versions. Overdrive transmissions allow the engine to turn slower in high gear and thus save gasoline.

The age of car, how many miles it has been driven, engine rebuilds and so on affect efficiency.

Deviations from stock such as a change to dual exhaust from a factory single exhaust improves MPG (even though it adds weight). A roof rack robs a car of MPG because of wind resistance and weight.

Modern radials may improve MPG due to less rolling resistance, but the diameters available for old school 14 and 15 inch rims may be smaller than the original factory tires, canceling out some of the gains as the engine turns higher revs to achieve the same speed. Higher inflation pressure typically used in modern tires eases tire roll, too. See the story about Tires, also in the GAS LOGS.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brand and octane of gas affect MPG, particularly the new 10% ethanol gasoline which contains less energy and hence hurts gas mileage. Oil viscosity plays a role as does the use of synthetics. New oil formulas create less resistance to moving parts inside the engine, increasing MPG.

A car that is always parked in a heated garage will get better MPG than one left outside all the time. Cars using block heaters get a head start on the warm-up process, too.

Driving style is major. One driver may take side routes stopping and starting every block while another may drive on a main thoroughfair. On the highway one driver may be travelling with 4 people and 200 pounds luggage at 80 mph with the windows open, while another is running at 55 mph with just a driver and windows rolled up. One may be cruising in hot summer weather while another is slogging through frigid weather on wet roads. As many factors as possible are detailed in each story along with the descriptions of driving style to help compare each figure.
