Tests of the OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME TURNPIKE CRUISER when the car was newly released average out to approximately 16.8 Hwy MPG.

Magazine tests rarely evaluated a regular 1967 Cutlass, but there are plenty of tests of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with the amazing Turnpike Cruiser package. The TC package gave decent gas mileage for the era, stable and very quiet high speed handling, plenty of room in a package that provided easier parking than a full size car. The TC had lots of torque for decent acceleration and hauling families with luggage over Interstate highways economically, quickly and comfortably.

The name Turnpike Cruiser was first used a decade earlier by the Mercury division over at Ford. Interstate philosophy inspired comfortable highway cruisers or full size economy cars. Various formats appeared over the years but it wasn't until 1967 with the Oldsmobile Turnpike Cruiser that  all the elements came together in one package.

The first use of the name Turnpike Cruiser was not from GM but Ford. The name appeared on a top of the line 1957-58 Mercury model. The Mercury concept of a Turnpike Cruiser focused on a smooth quiet ride in a huge car. A long trip was made comfortable using gadgets such as an early version of today's memory seat dubbed "Seat-O-Matic". Mercury tied the Turnpike Cruiser name in with the new Interstate system in a few ways. Buyers of the Mercury received a map of the existing Interstates. The Mercury Turnpike Cruiser emphasized Interstate driving by providing a trip odometer plus an average trip speed calculator named the 'Computer Clock'. Vents on the front of the windshield provided flow through air for long highway runs, aided by a roll down rear window. The rear window re appeared a few years later on Mercury models under the name "Breezeway". See the earlier GAS LOGS article on this site about the 1964 Mercury Marauder for more information.

MOTOR TREND wrung 14.5 MPG at a steady 60 MPH out of the giant Mercury. MT averaged 14.2 MPG over 439 miles of 60 MPH Interstate cruising. MOTOR TREND commented on the reasonable MPG returned from the 368-4 barrel dual exhaust 290 HP engine: "... the 290 HP engine gave better fuel economy as well as better performance than the 312. This is best explained by the fact that this engine doesn't work as hard as the smaller one."

MOTOR TREND's observation about this odd fact of MPG is confirmed in a comparison of the 283 and 327 engines in a GAS LOGS article on this site about the 1967 Pontiac Beaumont. The same effect is noted in the 1980 Corvette story in the GAS LOGS where the 305 gets worse gas mileage than the 350. Similar results are discussed in the ONE OWNER story of the 1971 GTX 440 which got better highway MPG than a 1970 Barracuda 318.

The economical aspect of the Turnpike Cruiser vaporized in 1958 when the Mercury TP got the 383 engine standard with two levels of a 430 as an option. The engines were slanted heavily towards high performance. The powerful engines were slightly aided in the MPG quest with numerically lower axle ratios fitted to the car not as part of a long term economy plan but rather in panicked response to a recession and sudden fuel mileage concern among consumers.

After the demise of the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser, General Motors became interested in this concept.  Pontiac revived some aspects of the Mercury formula as well as anticipating some of the concepts to come later in the Oldsmobile Turnpike Cruiser. In 1959. Pontiac gave 'Uncle' Tom McCahill a special full size 1959 Pontiac to test for the January, 1959 MECHANIX ILLUSTRATED issue. Like the Mercury, the Pontiac was a full size comfortable car. However, it was specially set up for a coast to coast economy run.

The 1959 Pontiac was not allowed extraordinary economy run advantages such as extra thin oil or 60 PSI tire pressures etc. Pontiac engineers wanted to duplicate the ordinary driving experience. A stop watch wired to the ignition switch recorded how long the trip from San Diego, California to Savannah, Florida took. The time included day time traffic jams that messed with the average speed which had to be kept above 40 MPH. Tires were set to 30 PSI, windows rolled up and steady throttle positions were held.

Uncle Tom rocked the Pontiac back and forth after a fill- up to free any air bubbles in the tank. After the 'shake', the tank was topped up again. The extra four or five tenths of a gallon of gas extended the distance between fill-ups. Over the trip this tactic may have accumulated enough extra gas to eliminate one fuel stop enroute, thus boosting overall MPG. Energy used to get on and off the highway and through streets to a station involve accelerating the car numerous times from a dead stop which kills MPG.

In the West the Pontiac's best average was 23.3 MPG achieved at the 46-47 MPH needed to maintain 40 + MPH overall average. Because of heavier traffic in the East, speed had to be bumped to 52-53 MPH to hold the 40 + MPH average. The 2,442.7 miles were driven at 40.2 MPH overall average in 60.72 hours driving time. The Pontiac managed 21.7 MPG with the two barrel 389 cubic inch 420E (E for economy) engine. The 420E had a camshaft that delivered top torque of 390 ft lbs at a low engine speed of 2,000 RPM. The 389 was tied to a Hydramatic automatic transmission and 2.87 rear axle. All of these tricks would appear in the Oldsmobile TC eight years later.

The 420E Pontiac varied from the Oldsmobile Turnpike Cruiser in an important way. The Pontiac 8.6:1 compression ratio allowed use of regular fuel which is in keeping with an 'economy mindset'. The Pontiac produced only 215 HP causing it to run out of power at about 100 MPH, while the Oldsmobile Turnpike Cruiser with its high compression ratio could run right up to 130 MPH. As the highway system neared completion, engineers optimistically anticipated 90 or 100 MPH cruising speeds in the future. Those high speeds required a higher compression engine to provide a wider margin of power at speed.

Pontiac continued to provide very low axle ratios with their full size cars through the 1960s. The low axles were available with the 'small' 389 and 400 as well as the king sized 421 and 428 engines. Pontiac dipped to a stunningly low 2.29:1 axle installed in a 1967 Catalina 400 tested in POPULAR SCIENCE January, 1967.

Pontiac also offered a detuned 2 barrel 400 GTO starting in 1967 which may have been inspired by the Turnpike Cruiser package. If you think about it, the TC was essentially a 2 barrel version of the popular Olds muscle car the 442. Pontiac didn't create a complete economy package for the GTO. The step down GTO provided a super car image without the premium gas requirement. It may have marginally improved MPG, too. Olds incorporated the low compression feature from the 'step down' GTO into the 1968 version of the Turnpike Cruiser. The 1968 TC became an option on the 442 that year using a different cam, 2 barrel carburetor, numerically low axle but could run on regular fuel like the Pontiac GTO step down option.

Fleet buyers for police departments became interested in highway axle 2 barrel big blocks. Real life use returned dismal 7 MPG figures due to police driving style. Police cars idle continuously until required to instantly accelerate at wide open throttle. The traditional four barrel big block with high numerical axles accelerate with less difficulty and hence use less gas under these circumstances.

The 1967 Oldsmobile Turnpike Cruiser took all the factors that had been tried before, incorporated them into one new package and expanded upon the concepts further. The Olds TC came on the heels of the home run Oldsmobile achieved with the Toronado the previous year. Toronado restored the pioneering image Oldsmobile was known for back in the 1950s. In 1966 Olds revived their image as innovators with the radical for the time full size front wheel drive Toronado. Cadillac let them work out the bugs, and then used the platform for the new Eldorado in 1967.

In 1967 Olds beat a new path ahead of the crowd again with the Turnpike Cruiser. Below is one of the first advertisements for the TC which appeared in the pages of the Oldsmobile magazine ROCKET CIRCLE.

The Turnpike Cruiser Package was only available on the top 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass model, the Cutlass Supreme.

Out of the five Cutlass Supreme body styles, the 442 and Turnpike Cruiser could only be ordered on three of the Supreme body styles: the two door Sports Coupe, Holiday Coupe and Convertible.

The Cutlass Supreme added wide chrome molding along the base of the entire length of the car from bumper to bumper. This chrome strip connected to wide chrome accents over each wheel well. The lower cost Cutlass had a thin chrome accent line that ran from just behind the front wheel through the doors ending just before the rear wheel.

Cutlass Supreme had cut outs in the rear bumper for reverse lights and double rear tail lights. The plain Cutlass had a solid rear bumper, single tail light and used the bottom tail light pod as a white lens reverse light. Cutlass Supreme was identified with the CS logo above the rear trunk lock and on the rear roof pillar.

Inside, the Cutlass Supreme had a split bench seat with center fold down arm rest or buckets and console. The split bench is plush with more foam padding than the basic bench offered in the Cutlass. The split bench provides that little extra support that makes a difference when you are doing long highway drives. The kick panels in the Supreme were carpeted while the Cutlass made do with plastic kick panels. The identifier badge on the dash above the radio informed you that you were in a Cutlass Supreme. Cutlass had it's own ID badge. Supreme had CS badges similar to those used on the rear roof panel on the plusher full length door panels. Cutlass had painted steel at the door tops and a partial door panel below that.

The basic Cutlass Supreme package also came with higher compression 330 V8 and 4 barrel carburetor, dual exhaust and a higher rear axle ratio. The Cutlass came with lower compression 330 using a 2 barrel, single exhaust and highway gears. In the case of the Turnpike Cruiser the 330 and Jetaway and axle were replaced with the Turnpike Cruiser drivetrain.

In the past attempts to build an economy family hauler, manufacturers formula started with a full size car. The Turnpike Cruiser concept slightly revamped this theme by building the TC into an intermediate instead of a full size car. The Olds TC didn't stop at economy. The frame and suspension was pure 442, making the TC a valid high speed highway cruiser that was stable and planted at 100 mph.

The TC squeezed out decent MPG even with a 400 engine. The tiny two barrel carburetor was calibrated to work with a revised camshaft. Cam timing optimized torque at a lower RPM range to accommodate the highway cruising 2.41 rear axle. The AMA specs on the car list both 2.41 and 2.56 axles. The magazine test cars used 2.41, but the axle was switched up to a 2.56 ratio upon public release. The early 1966 advertisement above lists a 2.41, proving that Olds originally intended to release the lower axle to the public.

Oldsmobile barely mentioned the TC package in the spec sheet, providing minimal information about the 400 engine in the detailed charts to follow. Model number 33800 refers to the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme which was the only model the TC package could be ordered on.

As seen above, the TC used the Turbo-Hydro-Matic 3 speed auto which was otherwise only available for the 442 or as an option on the Custom Vista Cruiser. All other F85 and Cutlass packages had to make do with the two speed Jetaway. The Turnpike Cruiser used a unique Turbo-Hydro-Matic with modifications specific to the Turnpike Cruiser application.

Below is a dealer bulletin dated Oct 11, 1966 updating the sales people about the Turnpike Cruiser package. The dealer brochures provided sparse information about the TC.

One important part of the TC package was a new Oldsmobile system named Climatic Combustion Control. This system provided heated air at startup drawn in from atop the exhaust manifold. As the engine warmed up, a plate in the air cleaner opened to mix in cooler air maintaining constant air temperature. Controlled air temperature allows carburetor settings to be optimized at 100 degrees F. The Turnpike Cruiser was thus able to run leaner carburetor settings than typical 1967 carburetors which had compromise settings designed to blanket a wide variety of outside air temperatures. This CCC system was optional on other Oldsmobile engines and later became a standard item on most US cars in the 1970s. The Turnpike Cruiser handling was the equal of the 442: both have a heavy duty frame and heavy duty suspension which improves stability at high cruising speeds.

The 442 was considered the best handling of the muscle cars of that era. Even the standard Cutlass with regular suspension was praised for balanced handling in an Owners Report published in May 1967 POPULAR MECHANICS. Anyone who has driven a 1967 Cutlass will notice the directional stability and nice cornering of the car. It is a terrific handling car when considered in the context of the era it came from.

The Turnpike Cruiser tested by magazines improved handling an extra step with radial tires which were offered primarily to boost the economy of the package. The added side effect of great dry handling was a bonus that testers considered not worth it in view of the scary wet handling. Rain and wet adhesion was too slippery. Radial tires have come a long way since then. The radial tires weren't included in the public version of the TC, but radials could be ordered as an option in addition to the TC package.

The Turnpike Cruiser could increase efficiency using an optional early version of electronic ignition with a magnetic pulse controlling spark instead of the traditional points set up. This would of course aid cold starting as well as improving MPG. A magnetic pulse creates less timing or misfiring issues as compared to points which suffer efficiency drop as the points degrade from use and age.

The magazine testers had cruise control on their TC packages to enhance MPG one step further, but couldn't realize the potential because even back in 1967 traffic was too congested to truly cruise on the highways near metropolitan areas. Sadly, the powerful and yet fairly economical Turnpike Cruiser wasn't a major success due to consumer indifference. The concept trickled into the 1968 two barrel 442 option and the 1970 Cutlass SX which offered a two barrel 455 with highway rear axle.

Extrapolating from the lousy police fleet MPG, someone using a 1967 Oldsmobile Turnpike Cruiser primarily for stop and go won't realize the advantages of the TC. This may be the reason for the failure of this great car to catch on with the public. Joe Average primarily commutes through traffic jams to work and grocery stores, typically only vacationing for 2 weeks a year. Even the guy commuting 100 miles from the suburbs to work was likely trapped in gridlocks which were common even as early as the 1960s.

Aside from long distance salesmen few people mainly drive on uncluttered Turnpikes far enough to derive benefit from the TC. Given the low price of gasoline at the time, the cost of the TC package wouldn't entice many buyers. The package was cheap at $142.18 but the mandatory Turbo-Hydro-Matic option coupled with the TC inflated the cost quite a bit. Rather than the economy angle, the TC held appeal to someone wanting smooth quiet fast poised cruising capability.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN CARS FROM 1930 says 62,178 Cutlass Supreme Sports Coupes, Holiday Coupes and Convertibles were built in 1967. STANDARD CATALOG OF AMERICAN CARS 1946-1975 quotes 1967 Cutlass Supreme production numbers as follows: Sport Coupe: 18,256, Holiday Coupe: 57,858, Convertible: 10,897 which totals 87,011. There were 24,849 cars built with the 442 package which was available on the same three Cutlass Supreme models as the Turnpike Cruiser. That means 62,162 Cutlass Supremes in those three bodystyles were not 442s. This SCAC number is close but not exactly the same as the EAC number.

This article is from CAR LIFE April 1967. CL tested the TC extensively and enthused that it was the car of the future. Low sales continued for the concept when a 2 barrel carburetor was available on a big block 442 for 1968. This new TC was able to run on regular fuel. Pontiac released a GTO with a 2 barrel carburetor that also dropped compression ratio so the tamed tiger could run on regular fuel. The 1970-71 Cutlass SX of later years continued the tradition of big block and 2 barrel with extreme rear highway gears. The big block 2 barrel low axle concept hovered around at the fringes of the mainstream but when fuel economy became an issue buyers simply flocked to cheap small import cars.

It took a few decades before USA car makers began producing volume numbers of larger sized cars capable of running low RPMs at highway speeds. Occasionally a decent sized highway cruiser would pop up such as Chrysler's 1976 Feather Duster and Dart Lite, but economy was usually equated with small econo boxes. We never really saw the potential of the TC translated to reality.

Eventually when CAFE standards began worrying automakers, low highway cruising RPM was achieved using overdrive automatic transmissions rather than low rear axles. Looking way back in time a similar approach had been used by the 1933 Chrysler Airflow which added an overdrive. Studebaker promised good gas mileage and relied on overdrive to achieve these figures. Eventually Chevy and Ford got into the overdrive game for awhile.

By the 1950s domestic cars had enough power that it was no longer necessary to equip the average car with steep gears to get going or to climb hills. With a low numerical axle ratio the overdrive was viewed as superfluous. Once automatic transmissions became nearly universal in the 1960s the overdrive experiment seemed to be forgotten.

Gear Vendors has an electronic overdrive that works just like the old Borg Warner units that used to be coupled to manual transmissions. The Gear Vendors unit can be added to most popular 3 speed automatics, and this is precisely the way the old overdrive worked on the manual transmissions of the past. The modern overdrive transmissions vary but frequently simply incorporate one or more gears above the 1:1 ratio.

See the story of a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII in the GAS LOGS section. This rear wheel drive V8 car is about the same size and weight as the Turnpike Cruiser and uses one overdrive gear to achieve a super low equivalent of 2.15:1 final drive. Look at the GAS LOGS stories on two Mustangs (2000 and 2003). Despite being mere six cylinders the cars can easily cruise at 100 MPH indefinitely due to overdrive automatics.

THE TURNPIKE CRUISER MPG ORIGINAL MAGAZINE TESTS

MOTOR TREND Feb 1967 tested the Turnpike Cruiser and recorded 16.3 MPG Highway at a steady 70 mph.

HOT ROD tested a Turnpike Cruiser in their April 1967 issue and came up with "18-21 MPG" while riding on 195R14 sized radials and running drum brakes for less drag.

CAR LIFE April 1967 recorded steady speed gas mileage for the Turnpike Cruiser. A steady 60 mph produced 19.2 MPG, at 70 it was 17.2, at 80 it was still an impressive 15.2, and at 90 it was 13.1. CL was running four wheel drums and Uniroyal 195 radials.

The POPULAR MECHANICS April 1967 Owners Report tabulated the results for Cutlass drivers with the 400 four barrel and the Turbo-Hydro-Matic 3 speed auto: 11.9 MPG City and 14.7 Highway. The 400 engine Cutlass is listed without reference to what proportion were 442s or Turnpike Cruisers, but mentioning a four barrel carburetor suggests they were all 442s. The 442 was more popular, so it's likely that the majority of the data came from 442s with the automatic transmission and the standard automatic transmission spec 3.08 axle. MPG REAL LIFE DRIVING/ JOHN- 22 MPG Hwy

John Gordon has owned a 1967 Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe Turnpike Cruiser for over 20 years. His Turnpike Cruiser is pictured below under Profile Number One.

John Gordon was a GM Century Cruise Participant on August 16, 2008 cruising from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. John wrote an article about his car for The GM Heritage Center website.

John bought his Turnpike Cruiser in 1987 and has kept it in showcar condition. It is never trailered to shows no matter how distant they are. The car is at a slight disadvantage due to the presence of up to 10% ethanol in modern gasoline which reduces the total energy potential in the gas.

John says:

"When I drive my car on the open road at 65 miles per hour, I can get about 22 miles to the gallon. Some of the newer cars on the road now do not get that kind of gas mileage. But, when I want to play or show off a bit, I can touch that accelerator and be gone in a flash. Unfortunately, I’m getting a bit too old now to behave in such a manner very often, but I’m not dead yet so every now and then... "

MPG REAL LIFE DRIVING/ BOB- 12.1 MPG City/ 17.9 MPG Hwy

Bob has owned a 1967 Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe Turnpike Cruiser for over 2 years. His Saffron Yellow Turnpike Cruiser is pictured below under Profile Number Three.

His TP retains original correct engine, camshaft, carburetor, Climatic Combustion Control, transmission and axle. The engine is now 0.030 over which is approximately 406 cubic inches. The replacement exhaust made by Flowmaster differs in slight details from factory stock. The car has correct drum brakes with Super Stock wheels. It has modern radial tires which are larger than stock with the rear tires measuring P235/60R 14.

The dealer brochure states that a 1967 Cutlass Supreme hardtop has a curb weight of 3,425 pounds while the AMA specs say it weighs 3,435 pounds. Substituting the automatic Jetwaway 2 speed transmission adds 11 pounds. The AMA specs indicate that the Turnpike Cruiser package adds 175 pounds to the bare bones Supreme. The 400 engine, combustion control package and 3 speed transmission are hefty and swell weight up to 3,600 pounds. This particular TC has some options that add weight:

Power steering- 35 Pounds

Power brakes- 10 Pounds

Radio- 8 Pounds

53 + 3,600= 3,653 pounds.

Comparing the odometer to googlemaps 39.3 actual miles register as 38.5 miles on the odometer. This means the odometer is 2 miles slow for every real 100 miles traveled. The difference works out to 0.02 miles per 1 mile registered. The Highway figure moves up 1/10th to 17.9 MPG and the city figure doesn't change.

The entries below were registered filling until the tank spilled at the exact same pump parked in the same position after a highway run that included a few throttle stabs up to 90 mph, some heavy traffic limiting speed to 65 mph, but most cruising was at a steady 80 mph.

Turnpike Cruisers produce figures equal or superior to the regular 330 Cutlass highway mileage figures. A standard 330 four barrel Cutlass using Jetaway 2 speed auto with 3.08 axle managed City figures of 13.3 and Hwy 16.3 MPG according to readers reports submitted to POPULAR MECHANICS April 1967.

Turnpike Cruisers rarely surface and usually someone has turned these very rare cars into clones of the more common 442s by changing intake, carb, and rear end and then throwing some 442 badges on the car. Many neglect to change the special TC camshaft which was specifically designed to optimize the 2 barrel carburetor and highway axle.

This list of 12 known surviving Turnpike Cruisers only features 11 cars that still retain the original Turnpike Cruiser package. It is miraculous that they survived all these years still retaining the Climatic Combustion Control air cleaner and pipsqueak 2 barrel carbs.

Too many of these rare and historically important cars have been cloned as 442s. There are so many real 442s out there that it doesn't make sense to destroy a genuine Turnpike Cruiser to just end up with a cloned 442. A clone will never be a 'real' 442. The other often overlooked detail is that the Turnpike Cruiser specific camshaft profile is not appropriate to a 4 barrel carburetor. The Turnpike Cruiser specific TH400 has a different shift pattern than a typical 442 transmission.

The 442 cloning game is pointless because the real 442s are affordable cars in plentiful supply. But most people don't think about cars from a historical perspective when they acquire one.

That was the case with John Gordon when he first bought his Turnpike Cruiser. Luckily he didn't alter his car in any way. He enjoyed the car as a nice well kept original car and then gradually became interested in the significance of his find bringing it to car shows to share with others. His car is all original unrestored and leads the list of known Turnpike Cruisers.

2) This Saffron Yellow 1967 Turnpike Cruiser was sold out of Redmond, Oregon by Larry Moyer of OLDS PARTS AND MORE at 541-815-4363. The TC was listed on the USA CAR ADS website in fall, 2014. Larry picked up 2 Saffron Yellow TCs at the same time. This one and the one shown below were both purchased Oct 2, 2014 out of Portland, Oregon.

Note the strap visible at the front of the car. The TC was just unloaded from a trailer when this photo was taken. The 2 door hardtop Holiday showed mileage at 22,128 miles with no idea of how many times around the odometer it had gone.

Larry notes that this TC has a newer carpet but needs seat covers. There is rust at bottom of the front fenders in the typical spot but it has good rear quarters. There are pin holes at the window frames. Top is factory painted black, not vinyl. This TC has a minor exhaust leak. Note the body colored steel wheels on the driver side of this car. A pair of 'Day Two' slot mags adorn the passenger side of the car. There is a dent in the rear bumper which suffers surface rust.

3) This Turnpike Cruiser is owned by Bob whose GAS LOGS can be seen up above in this article. This TC was found by Larry Moyer also found the rough Saffron Yellow 1967 Cutlass Turnpike Cruiser shown above (2). This TC was ordered with a black vinyl roof instead of a black painted roof as in the case of car number 2Larry picked up 2 Saffron Yellow TCs both purchased Oct 2, 2014 out of Portland, Oregon. Odometer on this one read 37,061 miles at the time.

The photo below shows the TC with Super Stock wheels which Larry had refinished. They replace the steelies and hubcaps shown on the car in the top photo. This TC was actually ordered with Super Stock wheels from the factory so this enhancement brings the car back to original factory configuration.

The window sticker below includes the L66 Turnpike Cruiser package which is a bargain at $142.18. The price is a bit misleading because the TC package also required the accompanying 'mandatory option' M40 Turbo Hydra Matic transmission which cost $236.97. This is not the same 3 speed automatic that was used in 442s. The Turnpike Cruiser transmission was set up specifically to mesh well with the camshaft profile of the TC's 400 engine which made torque at low RPM.

Other options include: Power steering and power brakes. External styling options include custom side window sill mouldings, chrome door edge guards, vinyl roof, remote control outside rear view mirror, and Super Stock 14 inch mag wheels.

Inside the car abundant comfort options are listed such as Soft Ray tinted windshield and windows, deluxe front and rear seatbelts, instrument panel courtesy lamps, and deluxe pushbutton radio with Bi Phonic rear radio speaker. The Y60 option includes the passenger visor vanity mirror, trunk light, and glove box light.

The glove box used in 1964 to 1967 Cutlass is a unique design. The entire top of the dash flips up to uncover the box. Most boxes have a front door that hinges downwards and invariably rattles. The Cutlass box never rattles. In the photo below you can see the glove box in closed position. Below that is a picture with the box flipped open.

When the padded glove box door is in the flipped upwards open position there is no protruding glove box door edge to slice up a passenger in the event of a crash. Traditional downward hinged boxes sprung open in crashes and injured passengers back in the 1960s.

Note that inside the glove box there is a narrow plastic slot to the left which houses the Protect-O-Plate.

Lying in this glove box is a US style owner's manual with a black Cutlass 4 door hardtop on the cover. The Canadian version of the owner's manual lacked a photo on the cover.

The custom sport front seat is listed as a no charge option. In the photo below you can see the center fold down arm rest splitting the bench.

The steering wheel wrap seen below was added to the car but is not correct. In the closeup photo further below in this story there is a picture of the steering wheel without the wrap.

Some no charge options on this car are present as standard equipment for the upscale Cutlass Supreme model such as: wall to wall carpeting, foam padded front and rear seat cushions, chrome roof drip mouldings, deluxe steering wheel, ashtray lamp, and deluxe interior equipment.

Deluxe interior equipment includes such things as full door panels and the clock. Most standard interiors from this time period provide only partial door panels with painted metal interior door tops.

This Turnpike Cruiser was sold out of Russ Dunmire Oldsmobile which was a high performance oriented dealership. During the 1960s Dunmire sponsored a series of drag cars piloted by Lynn Welfringer who was the service manager of the dealership. The most successful of the Dunmire racecars was a 1968 Hurst Olds with a potent 455. The sheet below is Dunmire's synopsis of dealer charges incurred during preparation of the car following delivery to the dealership.

As seen on the original paperwork, Dunmire charged $105.00 to prep the TC to factory specs. Mechanics usually gave the cars a tune up and inspected steering, brakes and sometimes checked alignment. The $19.95 for appearance care is described as durable glaze seals. This likely refers to waxing the car and maybe spraying interior fabrics with scotch guard. Undercoating was $35.00. The undercoating is still visible today on the gas tank, frame and floor pans.

Larry restored this TC over winter 2015. It was repainted factory original color with new black vinyl top. Body, floors, and doors were never rotted. It has a new windshield and seals, weatherstrips for doors. roof rail, and trunk. It also uses new window felts and hood bumpers. The detailed engine compartment is finished in the correct shade of black. The original bumpers were rechromed. The trunk has been fully detailed with the correct jack and jacking instructions sticker as well as a new trunk mat.

The original engine was rebuilt by Eastco Machine in Gresham, Oregon. The engine and engine bay had to be detailed twice when the engine was pulled due to faulty valve lifters. The warranty replacement lifters worked fine. Doing the lifters a second time also created extra work for Larry when he had to redo the engine compartment after the engine was re installed!

The correct original 2 barrel carburetor has been rebuilt and retains correct, restored Climatic Combustion Control air cleaner. A sign painter duplicated the original Climatic Combustion Control lettering on the refinished air cleaner top.

New hoses, belts, and fuel pump were used. In the image below the valve cover sports a reproduction sticker calling for premium fuel.

The original 1967 OH code TH400 transmission was rebuilt. The rear axle was resealed and inspected. The drum brakes were rebuilt with new master cylinder and brake booster. The correct radiator has been serviced. The distributor was changed to a Pertronix which is somewhat appropriate since the TC came with magnetic pulse distributor back in the day. New 2 1/2" dual exhaust with a cross over and Flowmaster mufflers was put on the car. All TCs came with dual exhaust from the factory.

This TC has all new bushings, tie rods, balls joints, springs and shocks. Stock steel wheels with 1967 full face hub caps can be seen in the top photo of this car. The car was in this state when taken to a spring 2015 car show. A woman attending the show was fairly certain that this was her mother's old Turnpike Cruiser. She mentioned that it came out of Tacoma, Washington and that the car was identical to her mother's except that her mother's car had Super Stock wheels on it. At the time of the car show Larry had not yet located a set of correct Super Stock wheels and had hubcaps on the car. Without seeing the window sticker listing Super Stock wheels the woman's story fit the true history of this car.

In Summer 2015 the steelies were replaced with correct refurbished Super Stock wheels which were what this car was originally ordered with from the factory.

The interior has been redone with new factory style seat upholstery on the correct and original split bench seat with a fold down arm rest, new carpet and headliner. In the photo below of the speedometer note the TH400 specific shift quadrant markings D S L (Drive, Super,Low). The majority of 1967 Cutlasses have a 330 engine and 2 speed transmission called Jetaway which used a quadrant marked D L (Drive, Low). Note the clock in the center of the right hand gauge pod surrounded by warning lights.

It is tempting to assume that the woman who spotted this car at a show in spring, 2015 is correct about this being her mother's old car. All that we know for certain is that the car appeared in the Portland area in the early 2000s and was owned by Tony who is a friend of Larry's. Tony drove the car for several years and then began a restoration when the car was in for some engine work. After the project had stalled for a significant period of time Larry bought the TC in pieces in 2014. In fall, 2015 Bob bought the Turnpike Cruiser. He had a leaking transmission seal replaced but otherwise has had no issues with the car.

4) Mike McGhee of Lockport, Illinois brought his Saffron Yellow 1967 Turnpike Cruiser to the 21st Annual Quad States Show Sep 22-23, 2000 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mike's TC was photographed by Keith Dickson who posted these photos on his wonderful Oldsmobility website. Options on Mike's car include the Turnpike Cruiser package, power steering, power brakes, sports console, anti spin rear axle, radio and power antenna.

5) This Crystal Blue 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible with Parchment vinyl interior is a rarity because it combines the convertible bodystyle with the Turnpike Cruiser ( L-66 ) Option. There is one other known convertible TC which is a rough condition car out of Rochester, New York which can be seen further down this page.

This nice Turnpike Cruiser came up for sale early 2016 on CLASSIC CARS. COM. After owning it for 12 years it was offered for sale by John and his wife from Mesa, Arizona. John is the second owner of this TC.

John purchased this TC in Mesa, Arizona from Sylvia Barto who was the original owner. Sylvia owned the TC from mid 1967 until 2004 which is about 37 years. John bought the TC in 2004 with all the original documentation: sales sheet, financing, service papers, every title registration slip from day one including the original title. The TC was totally restored, including the  undercarriage.

AO1 Tinted glass, A39 Deluxe belts, A91 Power trunk latch, B85 Chrome window sill, B93 Door guards, C60 Air conditioning, D55 Sports console, J50 Power brakes, L66 Turnpike Cruiser, M40 Hydromatic transmission, N40 Power steering, U35 Electric clock, U62 AM Radio, U75 Electric antenna, Y60 Lamps, and undercoating.

The original purchase agreement lists Super Stock wheels as a mistake and this option was removed from the car. The total price of the car with options came to an astounding for the time $4.361.28 before taxes.

The firewall data plate decodes:

Top line= Date code 05A decodes as a build date of May (04) first week (A). The indented '1' stamped into the data plate to the far right may be an final inspector's stamp meaning that inspector '1' released this car to be shipped to the dealer.

Second line= ST 67- 33867 decodes as Style (ST) Model year 1967 (67), Cutlass F-85 with V8 engine (338), Convertible (67).  BF00502 BODY decodes as Fremont, California final assembly plant (BF) and 00502 means it is the 502nd Oldsmobile built on the Olds line (includes all types of Olds cars). With GM factories building roughly 40- 50 cars an hour it would suggest that this TC was built sometime within the first day of 'week 1' of May, 1967.

Third line= TRIM 973 decodes as convertible bucket seats (97) in blue (3). Champagne (aka Parchment) would be code 4 so when restoring the seats it seems a color change was made. D1 PAINT decodes as Crystal Blue paint with a different colored convertible top. T is supposed to denote Cameo Ivory but it looks like a numeral 1 on the cowl tag.

Fourth line= B80 often decodes as chrome roof drip moldings, but clearly this cannot be the case here. It has to be assumed that Fremont used B80 to indicate something other than roof moldings.

Fifth line= H98819 is the Dealership's order number.  06-611 on the right side of the plate is a Fremont specific number. Up until Dec, 1966 Fremont stamped 2 digits with a space and then 3 digits after that. In 1967 the format changed to 6 digits with no space. This car defies this progression by featuring the 2 digits followed by a space formatting. This may be some kind of sequential number that accumulates size as production totals increase.

This TC has 138,000 miles and has been fully restored. The CD /Radio under dash is a quick release for car shows. In the photo below to the left of the Cutlass Supreme badge the dash has power switches for the convertible top and the rear radio antenna.

When a Cutlass was equipped with A/C the dummy plate between ash tray and radio was replaced with a vent for the air as it is on this car. The A/C was also vented out through supplementary vents on either end of the dash.

Below is a photo of the sports console housing the floor shifted automatic transmission. Note the quadrant listing D S L (Drive Super Low). The majority of Cutlasses from 1967 were equipped with the Jetaway 2 speed transmission and had markings only for D L (Drive Low).

The Desert Rocket Report March, 2006 and March, 2007 newsletter for the Oldsmobile Club of Arizona states that John Eilers took first place in the Class 500 Judging (1966-69 Cutlass & F85) with a 1967 Cutlass Convertible for both years. Of note John also celebrated his birthday March 3. Winning First Place must have been the icing on the cake for him!

The VIN provided was 3381772115399 which decodes as

Mileage is 68,019 miles. The TC was delivered to a Portland, Oregon dealership which installed dealer Air Conditioning. The car was sold to a Vancouver, BC resident who imported it to Canada. From here it made its way to Alberta where it was in storage for 13 years. Seller has original title and history of car.

The car has original paint with minor touch-up to the lower panels and some minor surface rust and a new vinyl top. Saved the air cleaner, AM radio and rear speaker, 14" steel wheels with wire spoke hubcaps, exhaust heat riser, distributor, steering wheel.

Front bucket seats have new covers and a new headliner, new carpet. New coil springs, shocks, and new upper ball joints. The car was switched Pertronix distributor, new wiper switch, AM/ FM radio, power antenna, new kick panels with speakers and custom Grant wood steering wheel. 442 exhaust tips were added to the car.

Current owner purchased the car at 64,000 miles and put in a new transmission modulator and new valve seals. He reports the car is only turning 2,200 RPM at 70 MPH.

6) 1967 Turnpike Cruiser being sold out of Parkton, Maryland on the HEMMINGS website in spring, 2015. This Spanish Red 2 dr post coupe has mileage quoted at 119,000 miles. It has  a black interior with buckets and console. An engine shot shows the original Climatic Combustion Control air cleaner.

Owner states that this numbers matching Turnpike Cruiser is very original with one repaint. Options include power steering, power brakes and A/C. Seller repaired the heater core, replaced some damaged ducting under dash that was broken and replaced the A/C compressor. 7) 1967 Turnpike Cruiser sold out of Cadillac, Michigan. Seller's name is Dave. He bought this TC from the original owner. This listing appeared in spring, 2015 on the CLASSY AUTO website.

This Red TC shows 93,000 miles and is said to be factory original. Second owner Dave eventually sold it for a reduced price of $22,000.00.

Dave states this TC was a 'brass hat special'. The factory list of options is extensive: power windows, power seats, power truck, power antenna, tilt steering wheel, A/C, and clock. This is an Arizona car originally.

In pictures this TC appears to have a white interior with column shift. Note the headrests. They were an available option for 1967 but rarely encountered. The seller doesn't mention if they were part of the original option load or added on later. The rear fender mounted radio antenna is factory relocated from the normal passenger front fender location to provide room for the coiled antenna and mechanism which is mounted inside the trunk.

8) This 1967 Cutlass Supreme Turnpike Cruiser is a convertible which somehow survived in harsh New York weather but does have rust issues. The seller's name is Lee and the car was in Rochester, New York for sale in fall, 2015.

The black interior has seat covers and a steering wheel wrap. The steering wheels on 1967 Cutlasses are known for developing cracks and it must be assumed the seats are worn out, too. Most convertible interiors are shot from weather exposure. A photo of the driver's door panel displays switches for power windows. Odometer reads 06,280 miles and since the original radiator is present it may have only turned over once.

The rear trailer hitch suggests that this Turnpike Cruiser seems to have seen some summer action towing. A nice car for the job. Top down and effortlessly humming along an interstate with more than enough torque to pull a trailer. Note the trunk mounted antenna which is the location for a power antenna. This TC came up for sale in Fall, 2015 and the seller's name is Lee : 585-342-3800 or 585-749-1348.

9) This Spanish Red 1967 Cutlass Supreme Turnpike Cruiser was built in Fremont and spent its life by the Pacific Ocean in Seaside, Oregon. The ocean salt air rusted out the bottoms of the front fenders and the window frame areas.

Top line= Date code 04B decodes as April (04) second week (B). (April 1, 1967 was a Saturday). The indented '3' stamped into the data plate to the far right may be an final inspector's stamp meaning that inspector '3' released this car to be shipped to the dealer.

Second line= ST 67- 33817 decodes as Style (ST) Model year 1967 (67), Cutlass F-85 with V8 engine (338), Holiday Coupe (17). BF05963 BODY decodes as Fremont, California final assembly plant (BF) and 05963 means it is the 5,963rd Oldsmobile built on the Olds line (includes all types of Olds cars).

Third line= TRIM 970 decodes as Holiday Coupe bucket seats (97) in black (0). RR PAINT decodes as the same Lower body color and Vinyl roof color of Spanish Red.

Fourth line= B80 often decodes as chrome roof drip moldings, but clearly this cannot be the case for Fremont cars since a Crystal Blue convertible shown further up this page has this option code listed on its cowl tag. It has to be assumed that Fremont used B80 to indicate something other than roof moldings.

Fifth line= G79474 is the Dealership's order number. 100645 on the right side of the plate is a Fremont specific number. Up until Dec, 1966 Fremont stamped 2 digits with a space and then 3 digits after that. In 1967 the format changed to 6 digits with no space. Thus it seems this may be some kind of sequential number that accumulates size as production totals increase.

Someone grabbed the 400 block out of this TC along the way likely for a 442 clone project. Still present in this TC are a set of aftermarket headers. The presence of headers suggests that someone hopped up the engine. The owner likely switched out the 2 barrel TC intake on the 400 and replaced it with a 4 barrel setup prior to the car ending up junked sans engine.

The tell tale hints that this car is a Turnpike Cruiser are the combination of standard Cutlass body paired with a factory dual fuel line. Only the 400 engines received the factory provision for dual fuel lines.

10) This repainted 1967 Turnpike Cruiser was a factory Spanish Red car with a white top. It was repainted what looks like pale blue with a new black vinyl top. It appeared for sale at the Long Beach Memorial Stadium, Los Angeles, CA. The TC was bought as seen in the photos with weathered paint Dec 8, 1996 from the Hot Rod and High Performance Swap meet and car show.

The prior owner 's name was Rowland Archibald McIntyre. He was believed to be the first owner, but the earliest title that came with the car is dated April 26, 1972. Rowland died of a heart attack at his home in Hawaiian Gardens, California. His widow asked the fireman who was called to the scene to sell the car for her. Death records indicate that Rowland died Oct 3, 1996 in Los Angeles aged 81. Rowland was born in Canada May 5, 1915 and moved to California at a young age. He would have been 52 years old when the Turnpike Cruiser was built.

In Dec, 1996 the new owner drove the TC around L.A. for a few days until the brakes failed in the rain. He shipped the car back to his home in Norway to begin the restoration process. This Turnpike Cruiser has the optional front disc brakes and one of them failed and needed to be replaced with a sleeved unit. During the decoding and sorting out process the new owner took note of an interesting anomaly with this car.

Instead of having the red valve cover sticker this one has the silver sticker with the 442 emblems on it. Judging by the age of the sticker it is likely that someone at the factory made a goof-up. The car does in fact have the 2 barrel carburetor called for on a Turnpike Cruiser so it's most likely someone just slapped the wrong sticker on the valve cover.

Strangely, this TC doesn't have a date code at the top of the fender tag.

11) This White (in primer) 1967 Turnpike Cruiser appeared for sale on E Bay June, 2007 listed by Jim Docjr in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. The odometer read 75,260 miles which Jim believed to have not gone around the dial yet. The TC was running fine prior to Jim removing the exhaust which he intended to replace with a new Flowmaster exhaust system including custom pieces to fit the Climatic Combustion Control system.

The TC is white with a white interior. It has custom sport bench seat, column shift, power brakes with factory 4 piston front disc brakes, power steering, Tic Toc Tach Rallye gauge, tinted glass, deluxe seatbelts and of course the Turnpike Cruiser option.

Note the shift quadrant below which is missing the 'S' position. The Turnpike Cruiser has a 3 speed automatic and its shift quadrant reads P R N D S L while a Jetaway equipped 330 car reads P R N D L. Joe the future owner and restorer of this car wondered if the Tic Toc Tach was swapped in from another car.

This TC has original wheels, hubcaps, and a decent looking white interior with black carpet (including the base of the doors) and dash. It has a passenger side outside rear view mirror which is rarely seen and may not be a factory added item. It seems the car originated from Connecticut.

Jim stated in his ad that the car is too nice to part out. He bought floors and trunk pan for the car although he states only the trunk really needs replacement. The E Bay auction ended June 23, 2007 without a sale. The TC next appeared on the Oldsmobility message board October 10, 2010. It was now in black primer but still needed some body repairs and trunk floor patched or replaced. Jim calculated that he had over $6,500.00 into it but was selling for $5,000.00.

In June, 2013 Joe aka 'Oldsmaniac' on the Classic Oldsmobile site bought the TC for $3,500.00. When Jim dropped the price on the TC Joe was afraid that the car would be parted out at that price and decided to save the car. Joe is from New Jersey and owns a stable of Oldsmobiles. Thankfully he kept this car stock during his restoration.

Joe replaced the trunk floor and body mounts, window channels and cab floors. The front fenders were rough so they were replaced. The car also had the wrong rear bumper (a Cutlass rear bumper was on the car not the Cutlass Supreme bumper). The TC must have been hit at some point in its history or else rust got to the original bumper. The 12 bolt rear end present on the car turned out to be a 3.08:1 ratio so someone had changed that out at some point in the car's history. Disassembly of the engine revealed that it was clean and in great shape.

Joe managed to find White Lacquer paint to produce a factory matched repaint on his TC. Once the car was painted the fresh exterior contrasted with the aging seats. New seatcovers were added from Legendary which fit well. On July 6, 2015 the car made a short trip with some minor bugs to be worked out.
