1966 DODGE Charger red- Kee- Brothers, OR

This 1966 Dodge Charger is part of the Charles Kee collection auctioned off in May, 2014 following Kee's death in 2013. Most of the Kee cars were collected in the 1980s on a 50 acre property in Brothers, Oregon.

Kee amassed several hundred cars stored on his desert property but would only sell to people he liked. Money was not the issue when he sold a car. See the full story in the 20 YEARS PLUS story on one of Kee's personal drivers; a 1967 Chrysler New Yorker.

This scarred red Charger may have been grabbed from a junkyard. In the window it says "Title- Save". The paint is checking on the hood and roof but not yet seared through entirely by the sun. The rear quarter has patches of surface rust on bare metal where chunks of paint have broken off. The interior is battle worn and missing the radio but the gauges aren't bad, the steering wheel is intact. The seats and dash are covered with cardboard to hold the sun's rays at bay.

The VIN XP29E61157935 decodes:

X= Charger

P= Premium price class

29= 2 Door sports hardtop

E= 318- 2 Barrel engine

6= 1966 Model year

1= Lynch Road, Michigan final assembly plant

157935= Sequential number

This Charger was sold new from Ron Tonkin in Portland and still has its original license frames. See a story on the Tonkin family of dealerships filed under OREGON/ PORTLAND in the DEALERSHIPS section of this website. The original Oregon plates expired Jan, 1981. It was only on the road for 15 years.

The tire holding the rear trunk lid closed is an old Uniroyal H78 x 15 double white stripe bias ply tire. The missing tire on the rear driver's side of the Charger may be the source of this wheel. Usually the smaller engine Chargers received a 14 inch wheel and only King Kong Hemi cars got the 15s, so the wheels may have been upgraded on this car at some point.
