1968 marked the first appearance of thisĀ Mercury Montego model. Essentially the Montego was a plusher version of the intermediate sized Mercury Comet. Mercury was emulating the naming system over at General Motors where an entirely new name as assigned to a higher trim level of the same car. The base intermediate sized Pontiac was named Tempest while the better equipped version was named LeMans. Over at Oldsmobile the upscale intermediate Cutlass actually outsold the basic platform which was named F-85.

The best equipped version of the Montego was the MX series which added full length chrome trim up top and along the bottom of the car. The door frames were all chrome and the roof was vinyl. The paint on the roof of this Montego MX seems to match the rest of the paint. The fact it's not completely faded in the California sun suggests that this car had a repaint after the original vinyl top was removed. This Montego has dual chrome outside rear view mirrors.

This 4 door sedan version of the Montego MX has a bench seat and column shifter but it does have the round gauges in a fake wood dash. The red rim of the steering wheel and dash suggests that the red paint job is factory correct for this car. Note the blue California plates which have been with this car for quite some time.

Someone has added period correct "Day Two" super wide torque thrust mag wheels shod with the ever popular B F Goodrich fat tires.
